About INCUBE

What happens, if you put interdisciplinary students inside a box, inject some entrepreneurial DNA and let them work on current challenges?

Next semester, the ETH Entrepreneur Club conducts this experiment a second time! Building on last year's success the event is expanding from Zurich to Bern, Lausanne and St. Gallen and Boston, where MIT will host the first international cube. Summing up to seven in total, each of the cubes will be home and workplace to five bright minds coming up with crazy ideas for the next big startup.

What is INCUBE ?

The INCUBE is a unique experience that gives you the opportunity to travel on the entrepreneurial journey from Problem Finding to Ideation to Prototyping and finally to Pitching, all while enclosed in one of our famous glass cubes in cities across the world!

Participants from Swiss universities will be gathered at our launch event on Thursday, September 20th and dispatched in six teams of five people who will shuttle to one of our amazing location across Switzerland. The event will start on Friday morning in Switzerland and during the night from Thursday to Friday for the MIT team. On Friday morning, you will all be presented with the broad problem provided by your cube sponsors and get to work right away!

Over the next four days, you'll spend your time in the cube creating the niche problem you want to solve, ideating on a solution, building a prototype and business model and finally, during our final event on Monday evening, pitching to a jury and an excited audience at the ETH Audimax. For logistics reasons, the pitch from MIT participants will be recorded on camera and shown at the event in Switzerland. Throughout their journey you'll will be assisted by their cube facilitator, relevant experts and successful entrepreneurs and have access to all relevant materials and aids.

The INCUBE experience is not just about the weekend itself. You will also spend the weekend before INCUBE at our pre-event, a 2 day retreat where we provide opportunities to learn relevant skills, crucial for when you enter the cube and chances to meet and bond with your fellow participants. It's also a great chance to meet and bond with your fellow participants. This weekend gives us the opportunity to see how the participants work together and allows us to have the best team composition possible.

The FAQ

You will be matched with other motivated people and placed in a glass cube for four days, where you will be trying to solve a challenge and find an innovative and interdisciplinary solution to it. At the end of the fourth day, you will present your solution to a jury and have the chance to win a lot of fame and nice prizes.
The event will start on Friday, 21st September 2018 in the morning and will end on Monday, 24th September in the evening. The locations will be three glass boxes distributed in hot-spots of the city of Zurich as well as one in Lausanne, Bern, St.Gallen, and Boston (USA). There will also be a 2 day pre event retreat during the weekend of the 14th -16th, in our top secret location, where you'll learn the crucial skills you'll need in the cube. For MIT participants: the event will start in the night from the 20th to the 21st of September. Your availability for the pre-event is required from the 13th of September in the afternoon to the 17th of September in the evening to allow time for air travel.
Each cube will have a different challenge to tackle and to come up with a innovative solution that could potentially result in a startup.
This event will be free for all participants! We will provide all the food and drinks during the four days as well as the accommodation a.k.a. the cubes. Also, you will be supplied with all necessary tools to support the realization of your prototypes.
The cubes have a size of 20 m^2 ( ~215 ft^2 ) and will be fully furnished, have appropriate air conditioning and a privacy corner where you can escape the glass walls and take your peaceful nap. You will have access to a toilet and showers in a nearby building.
Because we want you to interact with the people passing by. The glass stands also for transparency of new technologies with the public. Your work will hopefully inspire the people or at least ignite some thoughts.
As mentioned before, you will have 24 hour access to showers and toilets which are not part of the cube, but rather in the vicinity of the cube. Therefore, you are of course allowed to leave the cube. However, we want you to do all the work inside of the cube and you are also going to sleep there. The cube will be your office and bedroom for those four days!
For Swiss participants:
Our focus is to ensure to create interdisciplinary teams and therefore you might be placed at any location. So it is wise to keep your schedule all free for those four days! Transport to the cube within Switzerland will be covered.
For Boston participants:
Only one team will be created, thus no choice is offered.
Each cube will be the workplace of 5 participants but there are always more people around in case you need some help.
All students (BA, MA) and PhDs are welcome to apply! If you are eager to experience a new, crazy challenge and have an entrepreneurial and open-minded spirit, then you are exactly who we are looking for.
For Boston participants, you must be an undergraduate, graduate or PhD student enrolled at MIT.
Applications are open ! Just click on the following link: Sign Up!
We just need your time and commitment for the whole four days. Also, you should bring your own computer with charger, as well as some replacement clothes but please do not bring your whole closet in order to keep the cube tidy.
It will be an incredible experience with a lot of learning, fun, interesting teammates and the chance to be in contact with relevant industry partners. Also, you will get the potential for project incubation and support as follow-up - hopefully turning the ideas into startups!
Of course! Everyone is welcome to come and see from the outside what the teams are doing. You are also welcome to join the closing ceremony, more information will follow on this website.
